BOOK: SNEEZING SEASONS: The Inside Story about Allergies and Immunology

WINNER: (STORY) 2013 FIRST PLACE Contest/Health category at Five Star Publications. (2012 WINNER COVER)

I can’t tell you how excited I was to receive Gail Galvan’s book, “Sneezing Seasons 2013: The Inside Story about Allergies & Immunology.” I’ve had the honor to review lots of books about food allergies written for children. However, this is the first book that I’ve been able to read and review that is geared towards teens and adults.

Gail Galvan’s struggle with asthma and allergies began at an early age. She pursued a career in nursing and that coupled with her love for writing brought her this fun book. This 133-page book is an easy read and very insightful into the world of allergies. Gail shares her insights and knowledge through Henry, a friendly antibody. This book is made up of a series of stories that Henry is recounting from his perspective. By reading Gail’s book I gained a much better understanding of how antibodies and antigens respond during an allergic reaction. And I didn’t have to sift through lots of medical and scientific verbiage! {Thank you, Gail!}

This book would be a wonderful read for all adults but also for middle school and high school children who are trying to gain a better understanding of how our bodies respond to allergic reactions and asthma attacks. With that being said, I’d warn you that there is an incident in the first chapter where a young girl dies of anaphylactic shock. So use your judgment if you choose to hand this book to your child. Nonetheless, you’ll grow to love Henry and his buddies as you read their stories.
